Given the deportation threats that communities are facing under the new administration, many patients have been cancelling their medical appointments and dis-enrolling from programs, like Medi-Cal, for which they are legally eligible. For decades, community health centers have provided care to everyone, regardless of ability to pay, place of origin, or their individual circumstances. To help ease the fears in our patients and minimize the access barriers created by the national anti-immigrant rhetoric, health centers can put policies and procedures in place that protect their patients and their patient's information from immigration enforcement.
To help provide immigration resources to our members, CPCA has been leading an effort in collaboration with other state PCAs, NACHC, and immigration partners to develop materials that can help health centers prepare themselves and patients for an encounter with immigration enforcement. Through this effort CPCA collaborated with Feldesman Tucker Leifer Fidell law firm (FTLF) to develop an FAQ that provides answers to questions that many health centers have around immigration.
In this 90-minute session FTLF will review the FAQs and present highlights of the document. The National Immigration Law Center will also provide best practices on how clinics could implement elements of the FAQs. This would include information on how to review and identify valid warrants, how to best provide patients with know your rights (KYR) information, and how to prepare clinic staff and patients for potential raids by immigration enforcement (including having a preparedness plan in place). We will also have a clinic present on its success and failures in implementing elements discussed in the FAQs.
